The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for scholastic publications at the 93rd annual Scholastic Convention and included in the accolades was Darlington’s Jabberwokk 2016, which received a Silver Crown Award.

The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients took place during the 93rd Scholastic Convention, on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Columbia University in New York City. Members of the Jabberwokk staff were in attendance to receive the award, including former editor-in-chief Ethan Pender (‘16) and Selena Chen (‘16) who was managing editor of design.

“I was very proud of them,” said Upper School Media Arts Director Adrienne Forgette. “It was also great that Ethan and Selena were there to accept the award. They still take such great pride in the work that they’ve done and I love that they feel connected and invested in the work even after they have left Darlington.”

The pair also gave a presentation at Columbia during the convention.

“Ethan and Selena’s ‘Make Yearbook Great Again’ session reached the fire code limit for the room, proving that there was interest in their approach beyond our expectations,” Forgette continued.

Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student print or digital medium for overall excellence. A panel of Crown Judges assembles each year at Columbia University to view all entrants, whether they are newspaper, magazines, yearbooks or online media. Judges are experienced former advisers to student media, professional journalists who understand student media or professionals such as photographers or online specialists with particular expertise needed for the judging exercise.

Comments from the CSPA judges regarding Jabberwokk were highly favorable:

“The theme of ‘You Know What’ sets the mood for coverage that emphasizes student voices, and it cleverly serves double-duty as the organizing principle for the book’s sections. ‘You’ features the people, ‘Know’ covers academics, and ‘What’ serves as the home for clubs and sports. Strong photo packaging featuring sharp dominant images connect the visuals with the verbal. Consistent theme concept design elements are used smartly throughout, and in detail, including within the typography. Secondary coverage reinforces the personal nature of the theme with a variety of profiles and quote boxes.”

In addition to the CSPA Silver Crown, Jabberwokk 2016 has received a number of accolades including an All-American rating from National Scholastic Press Association with four marks of distinction; an overall Superior ranking from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association and recognition as the “All-Georgia Yearbook” and the best in the state for 2016; and 13 National Awards from the Quill and Scroll, an International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, including the Blue and Gold Yearbook Excellence Award.

Jabberwokk is also a finalist in the 2016 National Scholastic Press Association Yearbook Pacemaker competition, with winners to be announced at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention which will be held April 6-9 in Seattle.
