Honors Geometry: Euler Day with 3D Shapes

Honors Geometry classes took advantage of the nice weather to work outside while celebrating Euler's Polyhedral Formula. They were given eight nettings (patterns) to cut and assemble into 3D shapes. Although the students constructed cones and cylinders, most of the investigation surrounded various polyhedra. Students found Leonhard Euler's conjecture stating that the sum of the number of faces of a polyhedron and the number of vertices (corners) is always two less than the number of edges to be a true statement. The students will form groups and use their cones, cylinders, cubes, rectangles, triangular prisms, triangular- based pyramids, square-based pyramids, and pentagonal pyramids to build a construction of their choice.
