Darlington Connects: O’Keefe Johnson-Raynor (’13)

Through the special Darlington Connects blog series, we are proud to showcase the stories, connections, and lasting impact of a community that continues to embody Darlington’s mission and values long after graduation. Today, we hear from O'Keefe Johnson-Raynor ('13).

O’Keefe Johnson-Raynor (’13) recently sat down with Director of Alumni Relations Stephen Taylor (’02) to reflect on her Darlington experience and the profound role the school’s boarding culture played in shaping her life, despite her being a day student.

Tigers from the '70s, '80s and '90s often remark on the social divide that once existed between day and boarding students. The introduction of the House System helped bridge that gap, and O'Keefe is a shining example of how transformative that shift has been.

During her time at Darlington, O’Keefe was affectionately known as an "honorary boarding student." As a proud member of Cooper and Regester Houses, many of her favorite memories unfolded within the dorms themselves. Though she returned home each evening, she was drawn to the sense of community, diversity and global perspective that boarding life offered.

"I loved learning about my housemates’ different cultures," O'Keefe shared. "I loved hearing their stories."

She found herself particularly connected to Darlington’s international students, building friendships that transcended backgrounds and borders. While O'Keefe was learning about new cultures, her warmth, curiosity, and genuine interest helped international students feel welcomed and at home in a new country. It was a beautiful exchange of discovery, one that reflected a hallmark of the Darlington experience: classmates becoming family.

"It’s funny to think that one of my favorite moments was sneaking into the Regester kitchen at 2 a.m., sharing a mixing bowl of cereal with girls from all over the world and trying our hardest not to laugh and wake anyone up," said O'Keefe.

Those late-night conversations and cross-cultural connections didn’t just create cherished memories. They prepared her for life beyond Darlington.

After graduating from Darlington, she entered the University of Georgia well-equipped for residential life. She quickly realized she felt more comfortable and confident in the dorm environment than many of her peers, a direct result of her experiences within Darlington's house system. That confidence naturally led her into leadership roles, eventually becoming a resident assistant and, later, a graduate resident assistant while pursuing her master's degree.

As she was completing her graduate program, an administrator took notice of her leadership and asked a simple but life changing question: "Have you ever thought about doing this for a living?"

That moment set O’Keefe on a professional path in higher education. In 2020, she began her career as a residence coordinator at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Today, she continues to serve at UNC Wilmington as the assistant director of graduate student involvement while working toward her doctorate in educational leadership. More than a decade after graduating, the influence of Darlington remains ever present.

"It is so special to see that even now, the impact Darlington has had on my life continues to show up in my day to day," O'Keefe reflected. "That’s something I really treasure."
