Planned gift transforms Darlington’s Upper School Library

Darlington’s Upper School Library was transformed thanks to a meaningful planned gift from Elizabeth (Liza) Blackburn Phillips in memory of her son, William Thomas (’10). Liza’s husband, Doug Phillips, helped bring this vision to life when the library was relocated to Wilcox Hall in the summer of 2023.

“The decision to swap our Upper School Library and Student Center spaces emerged from observing how our students were actually using these areas,” said Stefan Eady, assistant head of school for academic affairs. “We noticed that the library, with its expansive layout and comfortable seating, had naturally become a social gathering space, while our physical book collection had naturally decreased over the years in lieu of digital resources. When our library services team and student life department came together to discuss this evolution, the solution became clear: why not embrace how students wanted to use these spaces?”

Thanks to the generous support of the Phillips family, Darlington was able to complete this transformation in a single summer with the results exceeding all expectations.

“Our new library space beautifully combines intimate book browsing areas with comfortable reading nooks, and we've actually seen an increase in book checkouts,” said Eady. “It also provides our students with a quieter environment for focused study and offers a new flexible venue for campus events.”

Meanwhile, Darlington’s relocated Student Center has truly become the heart of campus life. It now serves as a central hub where students gather, meet, and relax throughout the day and on weekends – making it particularly important for the school's boarding community.

“Sometimes, the best innovations come from simply listening to how your community naturally wants to engage with the spaces you provide,” said Eady.

Dawn Brock, director of library services, took the lead on designing the new-and-improved Upper School Library.

“We are extremely grateful for the generous gift made in memory of Liza and in honor of her son, William Thomas,” said Brock. “This gift made it possible for us to transform the library into a vibrant, inspiring space where students and faculty have a dedicated place to read, learn, explore, and connect. Because of this kindness, we created a warm and welcoming environment that will foster curiosity and a love of learning for years to come. We are so appreciative for the investment in this meaningful project and the lasting impact it will have on the Darlington Community.”

Chief Advancement Officer Julie (Wilson) Lucas (’97) said the Phillips family’s story is one that shows the impact of planned giving.

“Thanks to the Phillips family’s support and dedication to the school, Liza and William’s legacies live on in a beautiful learning space where students and teachers will gather to connect, learn, and grow for generations to come,” she said. “Their story is one that shows how a family’s love for Darlington can continue to support students and teachers forever.”
