First-Year Experience

From the moment students arrive on campus, our goal is to push them just beyond the limits they are accustomed to, challenging them to reach their full potential. For those who are new to Darlington, the school offers a First-Year Experience program designed to help students transition and develop the study and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed here. New resident and day students are assigned to one of two first-year houses, one for boys and one for girls, each managed by heads of house who are trained to deal with the issues that may arise as a student adjusts to his or her new environment.

By offering more structure and support, first-year houses prepare students for their eventual transition to the upper houses by instilling in them a sense of self-respect, self-worth and self-confidence. A handful of student prefects from the upper grades serve as mentors, living alongside the newest Darlington Tigers and helping them to adjust to their home away from home. Housemates bond through retreats, team building exercises and a buddy program, all of which encourage new students to find their own place to shine in our community. Lessons about time management, study skills and exam preparation are also integrated into house life so that students are prepared for Darlington’s challenging coursework.
