Students from 8th period Art 1 took a field trip to Berry College to participate in a Raku Firing. Raku involves quickly firing the ceramic pieces in a kiln, removing the objects when they are red hot, and placing them in metal containers of combustible materials to create unique smoke and metallic effects through reduction. While the students waited for the second firing to reach temperature, they were able to try out the pottery wheels. Their finished pieces came out with a range of interesting surfaces which complimented the historical pottery forms they referenced when making the hand-built vessels!
