Our fourth- and fifth-grade Spanish students recently had a delicious cultural experience! As part of their unit on Spanish traditions, the class learned about the traditional foods of Spain and even practiced placing their own “orders” in Spanish for the food they wanted to try.
The clear favorite among students was a jamón snack board—complete with Spain’s famous cured ham, creamy manchego cheese, olives, crackers, and fresh fruit. Students had the chance to customize their own plates, selecting their favorite items while practicing their new vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.
To round out the experience, students enjoyed their snacks while watching a film in Spanish about Spanish culture, giving them a chance to both taste and see and hear the traditions they’ve been learning about. It was a meaningful (and tasty!) way to bring language and culture together in the classroom.
