First-graders talked with 'Chatty Chums' and drew pictures of their characters (heroes OR villains with costumes and gadgets) and secret hideouts (settings) before writing. We also rolled the question dice and asked each other questions about our characters. We used word banks that told us characteristics of heroes and villains, superhero costumes with components that were labeled, and a story setting checklist.
