Attean, one of the main characters in the novel "The Sign of the Beaver," returns to invite Matt to a celebratory feast of bear meat. He is wearing a necklace of claws from the bear. The two boys came upon the large bear while walking in the woods. Matt finally earned respect from Attean by distracting the bear. The fourth-grade boys made necklaces with genuine imitation bear claws and wooden beads.
