It is with sadness that I share with you news of the passing of Life Trustee Delos H. Yancey Jr. Mr. Yancey’s life and legacy has left a great impact on both Darlington and the Rome community.

Delos and his late wife, Joanne Yancey, moved to Rome in 1973 when he joined State Mutual Insurance Company. Mr. Yancey would later serve as president, chairman and CEO during his remarkable career. Their children enrolled at Darlington and they began to make an immediate impact on the school.

Mr. Yancey was elected to the Darlington Board of Trustees on May 9, 2002, and served until he retired in 2009. As a parent, donor, and an industry leader, he was a significant contributor to the community. In recognition of his service to Darlington, Delos Yancey Jr. was named a Life Trustee in 2009. His love for Darlington can be found in his philanthropic gifts to campus such as the Joanne G. Yancey Library at Thatcher Hall during the Second Century Campaign and the Yancey Suite in the Huffman Athletic Center during the Campaign for Darlington.

His devotion to the community included support of the YMCA, who awarded him the Lifetime Trustee Award; the United Way, where he served on the Board of Directors; and the American Cancer Society. Alongside Joanne, he co-chaired the Celebration of Hope Gala in 1994 and received the Heart of the Community Award in 2006.

Mr. Yancey has three children, one of whom served alongside him on the Board of Trustees; seven grandchildren, all of whom are Darlington graduates; and six great-grandchildren.

We are so grateful for Mr. Yancey’s leadership and service to the school and for the legacy he leaves through his children and grandchildren.
