Day #StudentSpotlight: Bryn Merritt

Alyssa Abrams | March 21, 2026 | 88 views

A Darlington student is made up of many things. None of which is average. We help our students develop their interests, passions and pursuits, because we believe every individual has something to contribute. We also believe that only when you're 100% you, are you 100% Darlington.

Here at Darlington, every student’s path is different. We think that's a good thing.

Let’s get to know Bryn Merritt, a 14-year day student from Rome who will go from becoming a Darlington Tiger to an Auburn Tiger in the fall.

When you think of Darlington, what three words come to mind first?
When I think of Darlington, I think of words like community, dedication, and diversity.

What song reminds you of high school?
The song "5 More Minutes" by Scotty McCeery reminds me of high school.

What's your favorite show to binge watch?
My favorite show to binge watch is "Grey's Anatomy."

What's your favorite restaurant in Rome?
My favorite restaurant in Rome is Blue Fin.

What house are you a member of?
I am a member of Cooper House.

What are you involved in?
I am a leader in Cooper House, the vice president of the Discipline Committee, captain of the volleyball team, a member of the Student Activities Committee, and a yearbook copy editor. I also am part of the Advancement Ambassadors club.

If you play sports, who is your favorite coach and why?
My favorite coach is Hannah Zuloaga. During my senior volleyball season, she quickly stepped in as our coach and took over when we needed her the most. She coached us with a positive attitude while pushing us to be the best that we could be for our season. She knew what we were capable of and made sure that we were going to get there. Even though I only had her for a short amount of time, I enjoyed having her as my coach and I'm forever grateful for everything she taught me and did for our team.

If you are involved in fine arts, what is your favorite activity and why?
I am involved in yearbook as the copy editor. Yearbook is my favorite because I get to work hard with my friends to make an awesome yearbook. I love being able to look back at the yearbook at the end of the year and seeing my contributions and my hard work.

What's your favorite place on campus and why?
My favorite place on campus is definitely the dining hall. I love having somewhere to go every day to reset after class and hang out with my friends. I especially love the dining hall because whenever me and my friends are feeling silly, we will launch food to our friends and we will be laughing for 30 minutes straight.

Who's your favorite teacher and why?
My favorite teachers are Ms. Shores and Mr. Hudson. When my junior year was particularly hard, Ms. Shores and Mr. Hudson both made their classes so fun and engaging. I always left their classes feeling that I had learned something while also having fun at the same time. When I decided to take Zoology my senior year, I found out Mr. Hudson was going to be my teacher again, and I was so excited. Zoology this year has been so fun, and I'm excited every day to have that class because of him.

What’s your favorite thing about Darlington?
My favorite thing about Darlington is how much the teachers care about the students. If I ever have any questions or I'm struggling, I know that I can go to teachers and get help. I also love how close everyone is at school, and I will forever be grateful for the friendships that I've made.

Describe an experience that you've had at Darlington that you couldn't have had anywhere else.
An experience that I've had at Darlington that I couldn't have anywhere else is the relationships that I've made with the dorm students. One way that I've been able to do this is through RUMPUS. RUMPUS is particularly helpful in creating a bond between dorm and day students and this is particularly unique to Darlington.

What are some of the ways you've grown since you first came to Darlington?
Some ways that I've grown since I first came to Darlington is within my friendships and also in terms of my hard work and dedication. I have learned over the years that you have to work hard for everything and stay dedicated and motivated to get places in the future.

What is your dream job?
My dream job is to be a dermatologist.

If you have already committed to a college, please let us know which one you will be attending.
