Darlington junior Bo Powers was named the Rome News-Tribune Football Player of the Week, presented by Georgia Northwestern Technical College, as voted by RN-T readers.

Powers received 48% of the votes after rushing for 149 yards and scoring two total touchdowns in the Tigers’ 47-21 win over intra-county region rival Model.

The running back first scored just before halftime, while the Tigers were still looking to break away from the Blue Devils. He caught a 34-yard pass on a wheel route that put his team on the Model 10-yard line, then did the rest of the work on his own on a left-to-right pitch to score.

Powers then made the Blue Devils pay for a third-quarter fumble by running 60 yards untouched after receiving a pitch on a triple-option play.

Last season, Powers was a Rome News-Tribune All-County honorable mention running back.

Powers is the second Darlington running back to win Player of the Week this season. Senior Myles Twyman, who ran for 81 yards and scored three total touchdowns against the Blue Devils, won the award after making an interception and running for a 67-yard touchdown on consecutive plays of the Tigers’ season-opening 28-26 win over Mount Vernon.

Each week, the RN-T sports staff picks football players as nominees for the Player of the Week award. The nominees are then voted on by readers via the RN-T website.

Coaches are also encouraged to submit their own nominees for Player of the Week to ZPalermo@RN-T.com by noon the Saturday after a game.

Also nominated were:

Madoc Garcia, Pepperell senior: Garcia received 27% of the votes after running for 172 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the Dragons’ 48-42 come-from-behind win over Haralson County.

C.J. Walker, Model senior: Walker received 21% of the votes after a do-it-all offensive performance in the final home game of his career. The quarterback threw for 188 yards, ran for 129 yards and even caught a 30-yard pass. He scored two of Model’s three touchdowns in its loss to Darlington.

Aidan McPherson, Rome junior: McPherson received 4% of the votes after accounting for three total touchdowns before being relieved in the Wolves’ 62-22 blowout win over South Paulding.
