We’re excited to highlight the Young Alumni Council through a series of Darlington Connects blogs written by members of the Alumni Council. Today, Elaine Hackett Smith ('71T, LD '18) shares a spotlight on Will Crawford (’16).

It has been seven years since Wright Willingham Crawford graduated from Darlington, and I am proud to report the highlights of his days on campus and the progress of his life since 2016.

Will, as well as his older brother, Asa (’13), and younger brother, Hank (’20), started at Darlington's Lower School in preschool. Will is remembered there as a delightful, happy student who excelled in all his subject areas. He continued his studies at Darlington's Middle School, where he gained confidence during his adolescent years.

Will graduated with honors from Darlington and received the General Medal of Excellence. He served as student body president and president of the House Senate. Will was the head prefect for Summerbell house and served as a Tiger Expert ambassador. He was a member of Cum Laude Society and the Honor Council. To round out his Darlington experience, Will participated in the band, the crew club and the tennis team.

“My experiences at Darlington prepared me throughout it all," said Will about his days by the Lakeside. "Some of my best teachers at Darlington—Craig Schmidt, Beth Wilson, and Julia Dodd, to name a few—cultivated the hard skills I have relied on along the way: reading efficiently, writing well, arguing cogently, and working through difficult problems persistently”.

His high school record attracted the attention of Princeton University, which prepared him to study law. After graduation from Princeton, Will worked briefly for a small firm in New York, where he worked as an analyst—doing a mix of regular paralegal work and research, document review, and client meetings. Will remembers his time spent in New York as a culture shock, but said it was an invaluable experience for him.

Will is now in his first year of law at UNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and is very happy with his decision to study there. After graduating from law school, he hopes to find employment somewhere in the Southeast.
