Annual Report: From the Head of School

As we introduce this year’s online Annual Report, it is important to start by remembering what makes an independent school independent.

First, each independent school has its own distinct mission. At Darlington, our mission “is to empower students to learn with passion, act with integrity and serve with respect.” Making this mission real for our students drives all of our decision-making as an institution.

Second, each independent school is self-governing and led by a Board of Trustees. The Board is charged with ensuring that the school is meeting its mission, creates a vision for the school, and is responsible for our fiduciary matters.

And, third, each independent school is financially self-sustaining. We do not receive government support and, instead, rely on tuition, fundraising, and our endowment to provide the financial resources necessary to carry out the school’s programs.

The purpose of this Annual Report is to share details of our financial self-sustainability and to tell the story of the business of school. All businesses start with people and Darlington is certainly no different. Our most important and valued resource is our people. That community starts with our students and faculty, and connects with parents, grandparents, friends in the community, and, of course, our loyal and committed donors.

As we move forward, we do so with gratitude for all who make Darlington a priority. Thank you for engaging with us as we strive to empower our students to learn with passion, act with integrity and serve with respect.

Sincerely,

Brent Bell
Head of School
