Senior Ventures Spotlight: Ndiana Akpan

My Senior Ventures project, Gems in STEM, involves providing young students in our community STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) projects. I feel it is important to encourage young people to become engaged with STEM.

Over the summer, I attended two online summer programs based on coding targeted at girls to bridge the gap between males and females in technology. I was inspired by this program and want to make a difference in my community by teaching others in a fun way in order to let them know that STEM isn’t as tricky as it is made to seem.

I will be leading a group of Upper School students to volunteer their time in the community to plan experiments, complete fun activities, and teach young children about STEM career opportunities. These community service opportunities will spark interest and encourage more young people to consider jobs in STEM.

My Darlington mentors are Mrs. Wardlaw and Mr. Kinney. My community mentors will be the directors at the Boys & Girls Club of Rome, Restoration Rome, and Extra Special People (ESP). I am a member of the DarBots (the Upper School robotics team) and we will be visiting the Boys & Girls Club frequently to share our knowledge of coding and robotics. I will also be assisting the Middle School robotics team.

I am looking foward to this project and encouraging others to become more involved in STEM!

Senior Ventures is a year-long academic program built on a framework of leadership, innovation and community engagement. Through a proven self-guided exploratory process, seniors whose proposals are selected for this program work independently to develop a project that’s interdisciplinary in scope and is connective, performance-based, investigative, or entrepreneurial. Click here to learn more.
