Supporting Young Learners

PRE-K TO 8 LEARNING CENTER
Avid young students may need learning guidance as their minds develop, and we support learners of all types at the Kahn Teaching and Learning Center for Pre-K to 8. Four dedicated learning specialists work with students, teachers and parents on strategies to accommodate learning differences at no additional cost. Whether through a Strategic Action Plan for ongoing support or time spent together after school during Power Hour, students will find their learning specialist is dedicated to making their Darlington experience a success.
Pre-K to 2: Teachers watch for early signs of learning differences that may emerge in the classroom and connect with the Learning Center to evaluate concerns.
Grades 1 to 5: Learning specialists focus on addressing learning challenges with students in small groups and spend time in classrooms supporting teachers.
Middle Grades: Students with diagnosed learning differences participate in a designated class period that presents techniques to accommodate challenges. Potential strategies can include extended testing time, small-group testing environments, or multisensory techniques.

Accelerated Learning Program for Dyslexia

Darlington is the only school in Northwest Georgia to offer a program specifically designed to support students with dyslexia. Focusing on grades 2 to 5, the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) combines the traditional school experience with learning specialist-directed remediation that uses the Orton-Gillingham multisensory approach. Students are evaluated at the end of each year with the goal to progress out of the program after two years. ALP is an additional fee.

Orton-Gillingham Training

All Pre-K to 5 teachers and teaching assistants are Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator trained and all middle grades teachers have taken an OG seminar. This proven, multi-sensory approach to teaching literacy draws on developmental neuroscience to provide an optimal learning experience for every student, whether or not they are directly served by the Learning Center.
