Senior Veeka Malanchuk has been named Noon Optimist Student of the Month for February.

A day student who has been enrolled at Darlington for the past four years, Malanchuk has taken 16 Honors and AP courses during her high school career. She is a member of National Honor Society, Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, and Mu Alpha Theta; a day leader in Cooper House; a peer tutor; and serves as social media chair of The Darlingtonian.

This year, Malanchuk is part of the school's inaugural Senior Ventures Leadership Program, where she has designed a project that focuses on working with local businesses to accommodate Spanish speakers through signage, basic phrase sheets for workers, and student translators.

Outside of school, Malanchuck has participated in the Rome Floyd Chamber's High School Leadership Rome program and serves as president of the Floyd County 4-H Club. She was also a Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Ambassador and participated in a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), which allowed her to study Russian in Moldova last summer.

The daughter of Nicholle and Mark Harrison of Rome, Veeka was honored at an Optimist Club luncheon on Feb. 24.
