Get to Know: Rebekah Kinney

Jennifer Collins | April 20, 2018 | 564 views

Playful, entertaining, and absolutely informative, our Get to Know series allows the personalities of the faculty and staff who make up the Darlington Community shine.

Rebekah Kinney has been at Darlington for over 13 years and currently serves as the technology integration coordinator. Previously, she was the technology integration specialist for grades Pre-K to 8, a fourth grade and Kindergarten teacher and was a member of the house duty staff. Rebekah holds a B.S. and an M.Ed. from Berry College. At Darlington, she has received the Brown Faculty Award and was an inaugural recipient of the Carla and Leonard Wood Faculty Professional Development Endowment Award. She and her husband, Owen, an Upper School science teacher, are the parents of Ian ('17), Elliot ('19) and Noah ('23).

Let’s get to know Rebekah even better in today’s installment of our Get to Know series!

Where did you grow up?
Norcross, Ga.

Tell us a little about your family...
My husband, Owen Kinney, has worked at Darlington for 18 years. We have three boys, Ian (‘17), Elliot (‘19), and Noah (‘23).

Why did you choose Darlington?
Owen and I graduated from Berry College and knew we wanted to live in Rome, Ga. When we heard there was a position available at Darlington in the science department, we were thrilled and Owen quickly applied. We lived on campus for ten years, and it was the perfect place to raise our three boys.

Your seven word philosophy on education is…
Motivate students to experience repeated learning success.

What makes a good teacher?
A teacher's job is to fill a primal need for learning by creating engaging and relevant learning experiences every day. An excellent teacher teaches with passion and realizes students learn best by doing. Active teaching encourages active learning. Teachers should treat students as active participants in the learning process, providing them with skills, such as how to study, take notes, and express themselves effectively.

What music is playing in your car?
Classic Rock

What’s your favorite podcast?
Serial

Who was your favorite teacher (and why)?
Mrs. Lloyd, my eighth grade science teacher, because she taught with passion! She encouraged me to pursue my passions for engineering and learning all I could about the NASA space program. It was my dream to become an aerospace engineer… I am not sure what happened!

My favorite movie is…
“The Notebook”

What makes a good student?
A good student has a strong desire to learn and a willingness to work hard. Discipline and perseverance make a strong student do well. They should also learn that it is ok to fail and how important it is to learn from their mistakes.

My favorite trip was…
Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyo.

If I could travel anywhere it would be…
Australia

E-book or hardcover?
Either is fine with me!

Beach or mountains?
Beach

The last book I read for fun was…
“The Castaways: A Novel” by Elin Hilderbrand

Four people I’d like to take to coffee…
Oprah Winfrey, President Barack Obama, my father (who is in heaven), and Taylor Swift

The best advice I ever received was…
You cannot control other people. You can only control your reactions to them.

My hobby is…
Reading and coloring

Cats or dogs?
I love both equally and have both in my house!

Only my friends know I…
Do not like to waste time with eating and I hate to exercise (but I make time to do both).

When I want to crush karaoke, my song is…
“Let Me Be There” by Olivia Newton John

My favorite saying is…
She thought she could so she did!

What I like most about Darlington is…
The community! Everyone is supportive, respectful, and I honestly think would do anything for anyone to assist with a problem.
