Design Thinking Hurriane Relief Project Funds Donors Choose Projects for Schools

The Darlington Community raised almost $7,000 for those affected by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. My Design Thinking class decided to donate the money to the Donors Choose organization.

The Donors Choose Mission is:

“We make it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need, moving us closer to a nation where students in every community have the tools and experiences they need for a great education.”

Once money is donated to a school, we receive thank you messages. The Donors Choose organization sends the items requested to the individual schools, and we receive pictures of the students opening and using the items! I like that we are kept informed when each school receives the items we helped purchase.

The members of the Pre-K to 8 Service Committee decided to donate their portion of the money raised to a variety of schools at Donors Choose as well. Below, you can learn more about the schools we assisted and read some of the thank you letters. We still have more money to give, and I will keep you updated regarding the other schools we decide to assist!

The Upper School Design Thinking class selected the following schools to receive donations:

$346.11 to Mrs. Lima's classroom at Dr Henry E Perrine Academy in Palmetto Bay, FL.

Mrs. Lima sent the following thank you:

Dear Darlington School,

I would like to take the time to thank the donors who helped fund this project to replace a lot of materials and resources my students lost during hurricane Irma. It is nice to see I received a donation from a school. This is very interesting and I have never been funded by a school. I'm glad there are still those that care and want to help.

With gratitude,

Mrs. Lima

Dear Darlington School,

My students and I at Thomas Jefferson Middle School appreciate your thoughtfulness of giving during a time where many of us lost everything due to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Your kind gesture has helped us rebuild my classroom with supplies needed for my students to not only be successful in my classroom, but others. We can't thank you enough! If I could personally give each of you a hug, I would. May God continue blessing you for blessing others. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Dear Darlington School,

Thank you so much for your support! My heart is overwhelmed by the generosity you have shown to support and encourage the growth of my babies. Everyday my students are working hard to strengthen their knowledge of Science. These tools will assist my visual, kinesthetic and tactile learners.

The marker boards will greatly assist my students in learning speed, velocity, and Newton's 2nd Law Calculations. The document camera will be used everyday to reteach and present new information. The anchor charts will be used to scaffold learning and frequent reminders of the previously presented material. I am forever thankful for the kindness you have shown my students.

Ms. Nnate

$1,000 to Mrs. McDonald at Highland oaks Middle School in Miami, FL

Mrs. McDonald wrote:

Dear Darlington School,

Thank you so much for sponsoring our softball team. After Hurricane Irma, many things have been out of our control. Families have lost things and we are still cleaning up.

We are grateful for the pop up tents, bats and gloves. Many students will use the equipment that was donated instead of putting burden on parents to get the items.

With gratitude,

Mrs. McDonald
