Cates (’17) receives Vincent J. Dooley Award and Scholarship

Anna Katherine Cates (‘17) was named as a recipient of the 2017 Vincent J. Dooley Award and Scholarship on Saturday, April 29, at a ceremony sponsored by Athletes for a Better World. The accolade is given to a male and female student who best demonstrate character, teamwork and citizenship. Noah Shepard from Ware County High School was the male recipient of the award. 

Cates will receive a four-year college scholarship of $1000 per year as well as a $500 contribution to Donate Health, the nonprofit that she founded which collects and ships medical supplies to clinics in Guatemala. 

Anna Katherine Cates distinguished herself on the field as a first team All-Region Soccer player while also cheerleading captain, receiving the highest scholar-athlete award in both. In academics, Cates is a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Math and Science Honor Society and Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. She has received numerous E.L. Wright Awards for having the highest average in a subject and is a finalist for both the Stamps Presidential Scholarship at Georgia Tech and the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina. In the community, she is the founder of nonprofit Donate Health and also supports Rome Area Young Life, among other volunteer activities.

Cates is the daughter of Christi and Bruce Cates of Rome.

Ethan Delashmit (‘17) was also recognized at the ceremony as a finalist for the award.
 
Athletes for a Better World uses athletics to help develop character, teamwork, and citizenship through an intentional commitment to a Code for Living. The code guides these athletes and applies to all facets of life in hopes of helping to transform the lives of these individuals, the face of sports, and the fabric of society.
