Seniors Jade Cox and Bob Ledbetter have been selected as Darlington’s recipients of the Vincent J. Dooley Award, and will move on to compete for a four-year, $1,000 per year college scholarship. The accolade is given by Athletes for a Better World in partnership with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) to a male and female student who best demonstrate character, teamwork and citizenship.

Jade Cox is a four-year member of Darlington's varsity lacrosse program, and was named the team's Best Offensive Player and Most Valuable Player in 2015. The student also runs cross country, and is a recipient of the Scholar Athlete and Tiger awards. Cox served for three years on House Senate, and also holds membership in the Spanish National Honor Society. As a sophomore, she earned the Class Citizenship Award, and was honored in November as the Rome Noon Optimist Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Sunny and John Cox of Rome.

"Jade is extremely caring, but driven. She does an outstanding job both on and off the field," said Athletic Director Eddie Guth in his letter of recommendation. "She loves to please and will work very hard to achieve success."

Bob Ledbetter is a member of the varsity football team, where he served as captain, and also runs track. He is vice president of the Discipline Committee and serves as an Admission Tiger Expert. As a junior, Ledbetter was honored with the Class Citizenship Award, and was recognized in October as the Rome Noon Optimist Student of the Month. The senior volunteers his time at the Boys & Girls Club and has also served as an instructor at Darlington's summer football camp. Outside of school, Ledbetter attended Culver Military Camp for three summers, ultimately holding the position of Battalion Commander and graduating from the program with high honors. He is the son of Patti and Bob Ledbetter Jr. ('84) of Rome.

"Bob carries himself with a sense of purpose, a strong desire to make everything he is a part of better," said Guth in his recommendation of Ledbetter. "He has a hunger for success but he wants to achieve it the right way, and he understands that how he navigates the process is extremely important to how great the accomplishment can be judged."

One male and one female winner will be announced from a pool of finalists representing every high school in the state on May 7 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Athletes for a Better World uses athletics to help develop character, teamwork, and citizenship through an intentional commitment to a Code for Living. The code guides these athletes and applies to all facets of life in hopes of helping to transform the lives of these individuals, the face of sports, and the fabric of society.
