Darlington alumnus and community leader Bob Ledbetter Sr. ('53) was recently honored as an inductee to the Georgia Boys & Girls Clubs Hall of Fame. Ledbetter was recognized for his selfless service in a special ceremony at the Calloway Gardens resort in Pine Mountain, Ga., where he joined the prestigious circle of advocates and lifelong supporters of the renown youth organization.

The Rome native has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Georgia for an unprecedented 47 years, during which he has also served on the Executive Committee, as campaign chairperson, and stalwart donor. One of the many highlights of his time as a volunteer includes being a driving force in an initiative to help pay off a debt of nearly $275,000, accrued as the result of the Boys & Girls Club’s expansion into South Rome.

In recognition of his first 45 years of service to the organization, Ledbetter was given the “Champion of Youth Award.”

"Mr. Ledbetter’s dedication as the longest-serving member of our board and dedication to bettering the lives of youth in our community has been unwavering,” said Anne Paige Wilson, past president of the board and Darlington’s director of stewardship. “As a businessman, he has provided valuable guidance in addition to being a loyal supporter.”

The Georgia Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame was established in 2009 to honor youth members, women and men who give unselfishly of their time to help the organization flourish and advance the Boys & Girls Club Movement. The mission of the program is to celebrate members, volunteers, staff and community leaders who have left a lasting impact on the non-profit, while also spreading the word about the scope of services and programs offered.

"Bob has supported Darlington with his time and talent for many years as a former member of the Board of Trustees and as a connected alumnus, parent, parent of alumnus and grandparent,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “He has been involved throughout the community and is a living example of ‘Service Beyond Self.’"

In 1998, the Darlington alumnus was also honored as the recipient of a Heart of the Community award.

A real estate developer and investor, Ledbetter serves as the chairman and founder of R.H. Ledbetter Properties, LLC in Rome. In addition to his service on Darlington’s Board of Trustees, he has also worked on the boards of the Culver Educational Foundation, Culver Military Academy, Georgia Tech Alumni Association and Shorter College.

As a sign of gratitude for his generosity to and involvement in the school's business program, Shorter University honored Ledbetter with the naming of the Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business.

In addition to Darlington, Ledbetter is also a graduate of Culver Military Academy, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Following his graduation from college, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga.

Ledbetter is married to the former Betty Wright, with whom he has sons Bob Jr. (‘84), Wright (‘85) and David (‘88), and nine grandchildren.
