Home Away From Home & the ASSIST Family Supper

When you think of support, what comes to mind? Coach class? The Glenn Teaching and Leaning Center? A coach running extra drills on the athletic field after practice?

Sunday night, I witnessed how the greater Darlington Community supports the residential program. Thanks to the hard work and effort by Beverly Schrum and Lauren Sklar, the ASSIST students were treated to a fabulous Southern Summer Supper at the home of Marc and Lauren Sklar. The night included the five ASSIST students and their host families. (The local host family is the ASSIST student’s secondary support network and home away from home.)

Lauren could not have said it any better, “These students want to relax in an environment that smells and feels like home. They want a place where they can take a bath. We are that support.”

Each year, Darlington enrolls students from the ASSIST program. These students are not permitted to go home over breaks and need strong community support. As you may know, students may not remain on campus for the three large breaks and we encourage students to leave for the small breaks. Host families are critical and a major component of the ASSIST program.

To each of the local families, I once again express my sincere gratitude for your willingness to support the residential program and our students. I appreciate your time, commitment and effort. You are helping revitalize a program that is essential in our community. Due to your love and devotion to Darlington, we have some happy parents in Germany, Spain and Sweden. Thank you!
