The girls of the Regester House are currently collecting gently-used jeans for local homeless youth through Feb. 15. The school that donates the most jeans for the campaign will receive a $5,000 grant.
The clothing drive is a special partnership between Aeropostale and DoSomething.org. Last year over 800,000 pairs of jeans were collected in just four weeks.
"There are people out there for whom a single pair of jeans could make their day—and make their lives better," said Regester House junior Adrianna Young, who is heading up the campus drive. "By nature I just like providing for people, and this is a great way to help to do that."
Jeans are currently being collected in Jill Pate's office on the first floor of Wilcox Hall. Students that donate a pair of jeans are eligible to receive a $5-off [$25 spent] card to Aeropostale.
Every pair of jeans collected is redistributed back into the community through the Aeropostale at Mount Berry Square Mall.
"The girls in Regester are very compassionate," said Lauren Peal, head of house. "The students come up with the ideas for projects like these, and then they go do. They implement them."
Last fall the girls in the dormitory sewed pillows to go along with gift packs for the ELA-8's Pajamas for Foster Kids initiative. They were also closely involved with the Knots for Nanny project, helping to create fleece blankets for local cancer patients.
Following the conclusion of the clothing drive, Darlington students will continue to look at similar projects through the DoSomething.org Web site to determine which other service projects might be a fit at Darlington.
"A lot of people don't think about these simple drives," said junior Emma Turner. "But they truly do so much to help others."
