Upper School Director Max Roach's article "Introducing the Japanese Sword" is featured in the February issue of Andon, the Society for Japanese Arts' flagship academic journal.

Anna Beerens, editor-in-chief of Andon, read Roach's book, "Japanese Swords: Cultural Icons of a Nation" (Tuttle, 2010) and thought that his writing style and use of imagery would be a perfect fit for the journal, which is published twice annually by the Society for Japanese Arts.

"The SJA is well respected in museum, gallery and collector’s circles, and I was honored to receive this request and opportunity," Roach said. "While my primary area of research and publication has been in the iconology of the Japanese sword and influences of Shinto, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism and modern culture on the sword’s symbolism, this article focuses on the manufacture, appreciation appraisal and preservation of Japanese swords."

The Society for Japanese Arts was founded in 1937 by Dutch collectors and dealers. Today, with members from 22 countries, the organization has grown to become one of the top global voices in promoting and preserving Japanese arts. Click here for more information about the SJA.
