Janice Cox, lead instructor in the Early Learning Academy, is an experienced teacher who makes learning relevant and meaningful for her K5 students. Mrs. Cox uses multi-sensory instructional methods to guide her students through a variety of learning experiences. She delivers explicit and direct instruction, incorporating technology, visual images, kinesthetic activities, and manipulatives.

In a recent lesson, she met the needs of her visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners using technology with the Super Kids Program. Using the SmartBoard, she guided students through a Picture Walk, looking at the illustrations, discussing characters, exploring the settings, discovering the main idea, and making connections to letter sounds. Mrs. Cox reviewed letters C, G, O, and D. Students were then challenged to create a list of words using the letters from the lesson. She differentiated the lesson by encouraging students who added additional, more complex words to the list.

Mrs. Cox works with students individually within a small-group setting and customizes her instruction to fit the needs of each individual child. She supports student learning in a variety of ways, including teaching a child to correctly hold a pencil, guiding a child’s hand as he learns to form letters, and helping a child master the art of using scissors to cut paper.

Kindergarten students learn best through kinesthetic and hands-on activities. Mrs. Cox teaches students to compare amounts by using Unifix Cubes to show more than and less than. She uses her “ABC carpet” as a sorting tool for students to group pictures and objects based on initial letters.

Mrs. Cox provides a loving environment and maintains high expectations for her students. She has a gift for working with students at their current ability level and customizing each child’s path to higher learning.

Thank you, Janice, for demonstrating teaching at its best!
