The World Languages Department will be celebrating the Day of the Dead during the next couple of weeks. You may have noticed the colorful, funny-looking skulls in our classrooms and hallway, as well as the festive papel picado hanging from our ceilings.

What is the Day of the Dead? El día de los muertos is a two-day, Latin American fiesta that celebrates death as the beginning of eternal life. The tradition dates back to the Aztecs who celebrated the harvest by honoring their ancestors. When the Spaniards arrived and introduced Christianity to the New World, the two-day feast was moved to coincide with "All Saints Day," on November 1, and "All Souls Day," on November 2.

The celebration in the World Languages Department will include arts and crafts, music, food, films and read-alouds of the legend of La Llorona (The Weeping Woman). The dining hall will also be joining the celebration by serving a special Mexican menu on November 1. We hope you enjoy the festivities!¡Feliz día de los muertos!
