Darlington’s fine arts department will present the well-known musical, "The Sound of Music," Feb. 14-16, 2014, at Rome City Auditorium.

Set just before World War II, the story takes place in Salzburg, Austria. Maria is a young nun sent to be a governess to the seven von Trapp children. While at the von Trapp home, Captain von Trapp and his children are charmed by Maria because of the happiness and music she brings to their lives. However, everything is altered by the Nazi invasion of their country.

"We're really excited to be producing this show here at Darlington," said John Plough, theater director. "As our community settles into being on a single campus, this show will be a perfect way to celebrate. It's truly an all-ages show that the entire Darlington family can enjoy together."

The score contains countless recognizable songs including "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss," and the director's favorite, "The Lonely Goatherd."

"There are far too few yodeling numbers in American musical theatre," joked Plough. "I think I speak for every audience member when I say that."

Auditions for the musical will take place in late September.
