Science Fair: An Opportunity for Collaboration Between Grades

Darlington's eighth-graders had the opportunity to take a trip over to the Lower School last week to check out some awesome presentations and experiments that the fourth-graders have been working on as they learn about the Scientific Method.

“The fourth-graders did an unbelievable job again during this year’s Science Fair," said fourth-grade teacher Byron Dacy. "The preparation that went into these projects started back in August with the students learning about the Scientific Method. Mrs. Gwen Sirmans, our Science Lab instructor, was the leading force in getting these fourth-grade Super Scientists to explore a topic they wanted to know more about. They combined research, experiments and hard work to come up with the amazing projects that we were welcomed with last Thursday."

It was great to see the two age groups interacting and collaborating with one another. Not only was it a valuable reinforcement of the lesson for our fourth-graders, but it also forced our eighth-graders to recall what they've learned in the past while encouraging the younger students to take pride in their hard work.

“The eighth-grade students used the morning before their transition day at the Upper School to get back to their roots," said Michelle Major, eighth-grade English teacher. "They acted as roving reporters, interviewing fourth-graders about their findings and then reporting their work in a group newspaper project. The papers were then sent to the fourth grade for review and reading.”

I hope that the consolidation of the Lower and Middle School divisions onto a single campus will bring further opportunities for collaboration between grades PK-8 at Darlington!
