In this world of liability waivers, risk assessments, contracts and litigation, a handshake is more important than ever. A handshake can forge the spirit of honor and integrity. Last week’s chapel service was dedicated to an important annual ceremony -- the signing of the Honor Book.
This ceremony has a somber tone. The entire Upper School sits silently and respectfully while all new students and faculty members come forward to sign their name into the Honor Book. It is a simple signature, yet it is an important record of this initiation into our community -- a community that places "honor above everything," as we state in our school motto.
It was a joy to see the students as they came forward. Some were terrified, some eager, some jovial. Each was in chapel dress and looking sharp. The music was peaceful and filled the room with warmth. If you have never seen it, Darlington's Morris Chapel is stunningly beautiful.
After signing the book, students were prompted to pass in front of the chapel and shake my hand on their way back to their seats. With a simple handshake, I welcomed them officially into our community. Several students looked at me quizzically when I shook their hands and said simply, “welcome.” It occurred to me that when each of these students graduate, I will shake their hands again as they walk across the stage. My mind began to wander, as it often does, about the importance of the handshake. Welcome, congratulations, a promise, encouragement.
The Honor Book lives in my office on top of its custom-made display. It is a massive book, bound in black leather. The book is not important, though. The book represents and is the permanent record of each student’s commitment to our highest ideal -- honor. Each week, we recite the school motto at assembly:
Wisdom more than Knowledge
Service Beyond Self
Honor Above Everything
Each school year brings so many wonderful firsts -- the first class, first night in the dorms, first dance, first major test, first love, etc. With each event, the student is becoming a Darlingtonian. With each first, Darlington’s culture of "honor above everything" is infused more deeply. In each handshake, we affirm our commitment to ideals greater than ourselves... and we affirm that we will support each other in this journey and beyond.
