Faculty Members Pay it Forward

An important priority in the Second Century Campaign is faculty support. Responding to this need, trustee Leonard Wood issued a 1 to 1 challenge that resulted in the Carla and Leonard Wood  Faculty Professional Development Endowment. Many responded to this challenge and for that we are truly grateful.

David Powell, academic dean, was interviewed for an article about this year’s endowment awards and I feel that he captured the spirit for which these awards were established. “The Carla and Leonard Wood Faculty Professional Development Endowment is allowing us to build a culture of continual professional development among our faculty,” Powell said. “Teachers tend to be learners, but the intense routine of the teaching year makes it difficult to plan for our own growth. Therefore, we sometimes lean on what we already know from year to year. Time set aside for conferences and study, and money set aside for materials and other resources, will allow teachers to explore the newest research in their fields and adopt the best practices of innovative programs.”

The inaugural year recipients were Rebekah Kinney (4th grade), Jody Deaton (2nd grade) and Julia Dodd, Upper School science teacher. Julia has taken the knowledge gained through her grant project and is now planning an institute to train our teachers in this practice.

I invite you to CLICK HERE and enjoy a short video message from Rebekah and Jody about their experience.

“Thank you so much for making a way for this to happen for us. We and our students will reap the benefits for many years to come.” - Jody Deaton
