K: A Day in the Life of a Cox Cub

After being declared a Smith Smartie last week, I was looking forward to the next, exciting stage in my journey – becoming a Cox Cub!

The weather outside was gorgeous. As I made my way to Mrs. Cox’s classroom, I paused to take in the beauty of the Lower School campus. This particular day, it was as bright and beautiful as Mary Blair’s hair bow.

We started the day with a 1-100, dot-to-dot worksheet that, when completed, looked like the Easter Bunny. We then got to color the picture. As I sat and admired Jennifer and Jackson’s choice of colors, Mrs. Cox told the class that Abigail LOVES bunnies. After coloring our picture, we were asked to write a sentence about bunnies. Ava wrote, “Bunnies eat clovers.” Mrs. Cox asked the class if this was fiction or non-fiction. Kayo quickly responded, “non-fiction.”

By the time we had finished our worksheet, the rest of the class had arrived. Maddox came over to me and politely told me that I was in his seat. I thanked him for letting me know and moved to the seat beside his. He was great!

We moved to the rug for Reading Workshop. I sat next to Kathryn and Caleb. Mrs. Cox told us, “Good readers read to get answers.” So, we were eager to find the answers. Mrs. Cox wrote the “s.t.r.e.a.m” on the board and asked us to sound the word out. William yelled, “Stream!” He followed it with, “The first letter does the talking and the second letter does the walking.” Needless to say, I was impressed.

We then divided into groups for more reading. My group read the “Lazy Day” paragraph. Sinay read it out loud, followed by Grant and Kathryn. Mrs. Stinson asked the group what “opposite” meant. Ashton answered, “The other.” We then read “with our mind and not our mouth,” as Mrs. Cox instructed.

We were excited to have a visitor join us: Lillian Earnest. She quickly joined in and the other students welcomed her as part of the class. Tommy told the class he knew Lillian because they go to church together.

Our next reading was the poem, “Jack and Jill.” We had to cut out pictures and paste them under the part of the poem that matched the reading. Miles quickly got to work. Mrs. Price and Ava worked together, while Chandler and Tommy finished up and put their heads down. This was the sign Mrs. Cox asked us to do, as way of seeing who was ready for snack!

Chandler was napkin helper, while Ashton and William were milk helpers. We had a choice of Cheerios, Cheezs-its, graham crackers or pretzels. We reviewed our knowledge of the planets while we ate our snack. We then watched the Planet Song on YouTube. I found myself singing that song the rest of the day. We learned some new things about the planets:

  • Ethan learned that they’re four gas giants.
  • Chandler learned that some planets have moons and others don’t.
  • Mrs. Cox learned that Venus spins counterclockwise.

We then had a special presentation. We celebrated that Mary Blair had read a 304-page book. Way to go, Mary Blair!

On the way to lunch, Mrs. Cox led us with right hand-left hand, tiger stomp. Grant graciously held the door into Tiger Hall for lunch. The chicken tenders and fries were amazing.

After lunch, Mrs. Cox read us a “5-Minute Princess Story.” Marina had gotten the book from the tooth fairy. One story she read was “The Troublesome Sister.” Mrs. Cox asked if anyone had ever had trouble with his or her sister. William quickly said his brother had stepped on his Lego set.

The students were so excited to finish their writing and drawing for Donuts for Dads. Charlie and Caleb were putting the final touches on their work, which looked great!

This was another great day for me at the Lower School. I look forward to first grade this week!
