Lower School students, faculty honored at Awards Assembly

Lower School students and faculty members were recognized during an end-of-the-year Awards Assembly on May 26.

Perfect Attendance honorees included Marina Linos and Tommy Cowan in pre-K; Jack Cowan, Liam Norton and Khi Boateng in kindergarten; Thomas Monroe in first grade; Patrick Shealy and Luke McDurmon in second grade; John-Prosser Deaton, Molly Brewer, Anish Patel, William McClain, Spencer Shadday, Makiya Mayes, Trystin Wright and Dawson Shag Williams in third grade; and Rhett McDurmon, Andy Brunt, Spencer Herring, Anna Kate Cash and Jonathan Pieroni in fourth grade.

Citizenship Awards were given to Georgeanna Dempsey and Walker Sirmans in kindergarten; Mary Mac Pittman in first grade; Cappie May and Jackson Turner in second grade; Frank Manning and Dawson Shag Williams in third grade; and Emily Brandon and Amelia Allen in fourth grade.

DAR Babies, students who have attended Darlington since pre-K, were recognized. They include Tommy Atha, Hayden Baldwin, Jack Bates, Travis Black, Annabelle Braden, Lawson Blake, Emily Brandon, Andy Brunt, Lewie Camp, Zuker Campbell, Anna Kate Cash, Jack Eady, Spencer Herring, Gibson Hicks, Maggie Inman, Elliot Kinney, Kathryne Ledbetter, Grace Lester, Christopher Mauer, Rhett McDurmon, Harsh Patel and Jonathan Pieroni.

The Literacy Award was given to fourth-grader Jack Eady.

Spanish Awards were given to fourth-graders Bailey Kozlowski and Rhett McDurmon.

The Art Award was given to fourth-grader Anna Kate Cash.

Cornerstone Awards were presented to fourth-grader Bailey Kozlowski in the category of Academic Excellence, fourth-grader Chris Mauer for Sportsmanship and fourth-grader Annabelle Braden for Citizenship.

The Teresa Huffman Watters ’72 Student Achievement Award was presented to fourth-grader Harsh Patel. Established in 2005 by Mr. and Mrs. William Huffman in honor of their daughter, former Lower School faculty member Terri Watters, this award is given each year to the one child who exhibits growth in character that distinguishes her or him from others; growth in developing self-discipline by being responsible in all areas; growth in the desire for learning by working beyond expectations; growth in morals by discerning right from wrong; growth in friendships by being considerate of all regardless of their differences; and growth in becoming a solid person and student who should be proud of herself/himself.

The inaugural Lola C. Bradshaw Spirit of Life Award was given to fourth-grader Rhett McDurmon. Established in 2010 by Tripp Bradshaw ('85) in honor of his mother, longtime educator Lola Bradshaw, and endowed through gifts made to the school, this award is given to a student who best exemplifies, through attitude and actions both inside and outside the classroom, the highest spirit for life, love for learning, and unselfishness toward others. Rhett’s teacher, Flo Anthony, received a check for $250 for materials to enrich classroom instruction.

The inaugural Lower School Teacher Excellence Award was given to P.E. teacher Theresa Dulaney. This award recognizes a teacher who goes beyond the call of duty in at least five of the following areas: working continually to understand the needs of students, to know who they are, and to recognize the mind sets they bring into the classroom; supporting students’ growth and development demonstrating high expectations for self and students; using differentiated instruction daily as well as accommodating different learning styles; working with students, parents and colleagues to create a collaborative community of learners; promoting student success through shared common goal; continually developing expertise in subject areas using best practice in the classroom; participating in the shared goals of Darlington’s mission.
