Junior Sara Sekelj has been selected to attend an American Society of Metals International materials science camp for students interested in science and engineering.
The daughter of Sanja Cimic and Stjepan Sekelj of Licki Osik, Croatia, Sekelj will attend an intensive one-day camp at Worcester Polytechnical Institute in New England on May 10.
“I participated in Summer School of Science two years ago in Croatia and it was an amazing experience,” Sekelj said. “I was really interested in attending something similar in the U.S. when I heard about the ASM Camp from my science teacher Mrs. Dodd. Usually at camps like this one, you find out something particular that you never heard of before and you realize how interested you are in that subject!”
Sakelj wants to major in Biochemistry, Biomedicine or Chemical engineering in college, and she said she hopes this camp will help her decide what she really wants to do in her life.
“If you look at it closely, every year, if not more often, we hear about new viruses that caused a new disease that will mutate to a more dangerous one and will destroy someone’s life,” Sakelj said. “Science gives you an opportunity to explore, predict and explain everything that we are going through. It can save lives as long as there are people that will use all their knowledge and effort to help others. That is why I love science. It gives me an opportunity to use what I know in order to make a change.”
The American Society of Metals sponsors camps in about 20 locations in the U.S. and abroad. Up to 30 rising juniors or seniors are selected for each camp. Candidates are chosen by a committee of practicing engineers, and should have a strong math and science background and an interest in pursuing a career in science, engineering, technology or mathematics. ASM International covers all costs except transportation to and from the camp.
