Athletes recognized at Fall Sports Assembly

Outstanding athletes in varsity football, cross country, softball and volleyball were recognized at the Fall Sports Assembly Monday, Dec. 3 in Morris Chapel.

In football:

Seniors Andrew Green of Lindale, Ga., and Garrett Henderson of Aragon, Ga., received the Macon A. Brock Award, donated by Brock Jewelry Company to honor the most valuable offensive and defensive linemen on the team.

Senior Derricus Ellis of Rome received the Roger Hackett Award, given to the most valuable back on the team.

Senior Collie Powers received the Newton Jewelers Award, given by Mr. Jim Newton to the most outstanding blocker on the team.

Senior Patrick Wilson of Rome received the Ross Lynn Award, established by Mr. J.C. Rhea for the player who has meant the most to the team in spirit and conduct, even though he may not have won a letter.

Senior Patrick Collier of Rome received the Alumni Football Award, given by a Rome alumnus to the player who is chosen by his teammates as the most valuable member of the team. He also received the Billy Atkins Award, given by Bill Atkins (’50) to the senior player who has most exemplified the phrase “paying the price” for excellence in football at Darlington, and the Head Hunter Award, donated by Greg Hopkins (’69) and Keith Hopkins (’95) to honor the leading tackler on the team.

Senior Tyson Betts of Rome received the Charlie Davidson Award, given to the most outstanding defensive back on the team.

Senior Trey Payne of Rome was selected by area football officials to receive the Golden Helmut Award for sportsmanship and cooperation on the field.

Junior Patrick Pierson of Rome received the Darlington Boosters Club Scholastic Award, which is sponsored by the Darlington Boosters Club and given to the player with the highest academic average.

Ellis, Collier, Wilson and senior Ben Jackson of Rome also received Captain Awards.

In cross country:

Seniors Lucy Izard of Atlanta and Andy Lewis of Rome received Most Valuable Runner Awards, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association.

Junior Anna Fox and senior Grover Brown, both of Cartersville, Ga., received the Mrs. Jesse C. Atkins Cross-Country Spirit Award, presented to the team members who have contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.

In softball:

Senior Kaycie Bevis of Cedartown, Ga., received the Most Valuable Player Award, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association.

Sophomore Anna Swafford of Dallas, Ga., received the Girls Softball Spirit Award, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.

Senior Jennifer Watford of Cedartown, Ga., received the Coaches' Award.

In volleyball:

Junior Nora Cook of Cedartown, Ga., received the Most Valuable Player Award, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association. She also received the Outstanding Team Contribution Award.

Sophomore Emily Braden of Rome received the Girls Volleyball Spirit Award, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.

Junior Katie Flint of Tampa, Fla., received the Practice Award for Effort.

Junior Shanarra Goode of Cypress, Calif., received the Most Improved Award.

Senior Alex Dodd of Rome received the Coaches’ Award.

Senior Starla Brumit of Rome and Cook received Captain Awards.
