Darlington School is pleased to announce that Jennifer Amobi, current Lower School Spanish teacher, has been named head varsity volleyball coach for the 2008-09 school year. She will also move over to the Middle School to teach Spanish.
“Coach Amobi has already proven herself as exceptional leader and role model for student-athletes as a basketball and soccer coach. The move to head volleyball coach is a natural fit for Jennifer, who also served as assistant volleyball coach last season,” said Bob Stinchcomb, incoming athletic director. “For the first time in many years, Darlington will begin the 2008-09 year in the GHSA single ‘A’ classification. Our volleyball team will be in good hands with Coach Jennifer Amobi at the helm.”
Amobi holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Auburn University. During her college volleyball career, she received Player of the Week in both the SEC and Conference USA, and was named to the Conference USA Freshman Team. She was also sixth in the SEC in kills; Lead Auburn in kills during the 2004 and 2005 seasons; and a member of the AVCA All-American Academic Team. At Auburn, she also threw shot put for the track and field team, and was named NCAA Track and Field Champion in 2006.
Amobi has five years of coaching experience at schools, recreation centers and camps around the country. Prior to her arrival at Darlington in 2007, she coached volleyball, junior varsity basketball, and track and field at Lee Scott Academy in Auburn, where she also taught fitness and P.E.
“I am just filled with excitement about this opportunity to coach the varsity Lady Tigers,” Amobi said. “We [the junior varsity squad] had such a wonderful season this year, and I was so impressed with their growth and knowledge of the game. I would love to extend this to the varsity girls … Not only will I enjoy coaching them, but I look forward to getting to know them and hope to be a positive influence in their lives.”
