Darlington is pleased to announce that there are 29 merit scholars for the 2007-08 school year. Based on academic achievements, merit scholarships are divided into specific named scholarships.
“We are proud to have these 28 students at Darlington School and feel that they are very deserving of these scholarships,” said Casey Zimmer, director of financial aid. “Not only does each of these students exhibit outstanding academic ability; they are also very involved on campus and in the community, representing the School in an ideal manner.”
The Cornwell Scholarship, established in 2000, was awarded to juniors John Weeks of Durham and Kathryn Aldrich of Charlotte.
Established in 1991 in memory of George Andrew Dorsey, beloved teacher, by friends and former students, the George Dorsey Scholarship was awarded to eighth-grader Michael Williams of Rome.
Established by the Grizzard family in honor of Elson S. Floyd (’74), Darlington’s first African-American graduate, the Elson Floyd Scholarship was awarded to senior Derricus Ellis of Rome; freshmen Issac Nichols and Brisha Askew of Rome; eighth-grader Kendall Hawkins of Cartersville, Ga.; seventh-grader Brandon Knott of Kennesaw, Ga.; and sixth-grader Theo Welch of Rome.
The Goizueta Scholarship, established in 2001, was awarded to seniors Justin Smith of Rome and Antonio Castanon of Newnan, Ga.
The Vernon and Gaynelle Grizzard Scholarship, established in 1993, was awarded to senior Ashley Greene, junior Ebony Carter, sophomore Emily Braden and third-grader Kelsey Garrett, all of Rome.
The Amanda Hubbard deCosterd (’78) Endowed Scholarship, established in 2000 by Jerry and Patsy Hubbard in memory of their daughter, was awarded to junior Cedrica Spivey of Rome.
The Huffman Family Scholarship was established in 2004 by Rocky Huffman (’67) in honor of his father, Billy Huffman (’40). The scholarship was awarded to senior Grover Brown of Cartersville, Ga., and junior Amee Eubanks, sophomore Jesse Milner, and freshman Brisha Askew, all of Rome.
The J. Ross McCain Honor Scholarship was awarded to senior Mac Gilliland of Staunton, Va., and juniors Katie Flint of Tampa, Fla., and Taylor Josey of Newnan, Ga.
Established in 2000 by the William S. “Billy” Morris III (’52) family, the Morris Scholarship was awarded to juniors Korea Black of Lyerly, Ga., Rachel Buckle of Acworth, Ga., and Garrett Brown of Cloudland, Ga.; sophomore Victoria Ross of Huntsville, Ala.; and freshmen Chad Collins of Lithonia, Ga., and Chelsea Winfrey of Morrow, Ga.
