Berry College women’s basketball coach Jonathan Norton normally has to go out looking for star players. But on Monday night, he he didn’t even have to leave the Berry campus in order to mingle with some of the area’s best and brightest.
Norton was the featured speaker at the 21st Annual Northwest Georgia Tip-off Club’s Banquet at the Krannert Center, where a room full of local stars gathered to receive awards and recognition for the 2006-07 season.
The list included Coosa senior Corey Edmondson and Darlington senior Corey Roper, who were named by the Club as the Co-Players of the Year for boys basketball. Model junior Kiara Smith was named the girls’ Co-Player of the Year, sharing the award with Gordon Lee’s Kori Penland.
Those four players were the captians of the Club’s Team of the Year squad. The rest of the Greater Rome players named to the team were: Adairsville’s Raven Walker and Jacob Arp; Armuchee’s Ashley Aker and Corey Dowdy; Calhoun’s Kayla Ralston and Devonta McClain; Cedartown’s Jessica Glover and Chris Careathers; Coosa’s Robyn Foster and Edmondson; Darlington’s Brittany Hightower; Gordon Central’s Lauren DePerro and Gerald Washington; Model’s Jack Moss; Pepperell’s Kristin Henderson and Steven Pruitt; Rockmart’s Chasity McPherson and DeAndre Blackmon; Rome High’s Tanisha Woodard and Tony Woods; Trion’s Julia Owings and Jordan Reynolds.
On the college level, Mallory Ranfos was named Berry’s female Player of the Year, while Tramaine Aaron and Butch Caldwell shared the Male Player of the Year award. For Shorter, Nicole Frechette and Kedric Wilson took the Player of the Year honors. Also, the Pepperell middle school team, coached by Brian Henderson, was named the girls middle school Team of the Year.
Recognized for their career contributions to prep basketball were: George Raley (an area referee) and Ken Bishop (the public address announcer at LaFayette).
