Darlington mourns loss of life trustee

We are saddened to report that Life Trustee and '49 alumnus Harold Frierson (Ted) Hunter Jr., 73, died June 7, 2005.

Named a Distinguished Alumnus of Darlington in 1999-2000, Ted was the son of Harold F. Hunter Sr. and Laura Graham Hunter, He was born Jan. 16, 1932. A graduate and former member of the Board of Visitors of Emory University, Ted served as an officer on active duty in the Navy for four years and then in the U.S. Naval Intelligence Reserve, retiring with the rank of Commander.

Ted spent 43 years in the securities industry, beginning as a broker with Courts and Company in 1954. He established the Rome office of A.G. Edwards and Sons in 1970, and retired from A.G. Edwards as a vice president in 2000. Ted served four terms as a director of the Georgia Securities Dealers Association and was an arbitrator with the National Association of Security Dealers. He was a member and past president of the Rome Rotary Club, a member and past chairman of the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority, a member and past chairman of the Rome City Commission, and a former director of Home Federal Savings Bank. He was a member and Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Slonaker Hunter; daughter, Laura Graham Hunter of Clayton, Ga.; son, David Bruce ('78) and his wife, Patricia; two grandchildren, Virginia Dailey Hunter and Patrick Christopher Hunter, all of Rome, Ga. He is survived by three brothers, John G. Hunter ('55) of New York; Guy O. Hunter ('61) of Young Harris, Ga.; and David G. Hunter ('65) of Rome.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death in 1985 by a son, John Christopher Hunter ('82), for whom Chris Hunter Stadium at Darlington is named.

Darlington School expresses deepest sympathy to the family. A memorial service was held Thursday, June 9, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rome, with Dr. Roger A. Martin officiating.
