School welcomes new faculty and staff members

Darlington School announces the following new faculty and staff members for the 2005-06 school year:

Wendell Barnes will assist with winter and spring theatre productions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama and Theatre from the University of Georgia. During the last 26 years, he has directed more than 28 plays including “Carousel,” “Damn Yankees,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Pinocchio,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Bye, Bye Birdie” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” He will live on campus.

Will Camp has been named instrumental director for the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. He will also direct the winter musical. He holds a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in jazz studies from the University of West Georgia, where he was a member of the Honors College and a Wrights Scholar. He has taught privately in his home studio for five years, and has played professionally for eight years with the Alabama Symphony Pops, the West Georgia Jazz Ensemble and the West Georgia Saxophone Ensemble. He will live off campus.

Jennifer Carman will teach English at Darlington's Upper School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Berry College with a minor in Spanish. While at Berry, she worked as a research assistant for the Evans School of Humanities. She will live off campus.

Alice Clements will teach third grade at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education from Berry College. She has taught second-, fourth- and sixth-grade Sunday School at First Baptist Church, has substitute taught at the Lower School, and has served as president and vice president of the Lower School Parents Council in past years. She will live off campus.

Mary Elizabeth (BeBe) Cline will teach fifth grade at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Mercer University and a Master of Education from the University of Georgia. She has 10 years of experience in elementary education, and was named Teacher of the Year at Pepperell Middle School in 1994. She will live off campus.

Suzanne Davidson has been named administrative assistant for the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University. She will live off campus.

Jody Deaton will teach kindergarten at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Georgia, where she graduated cum laude, and a Master of Education in Early Childhood Education from Berry College. She has 14 years of experience in elementary education. She will live off campus.

Bryan Evans (’99) will teach Humanities and coach Middle School softball. He will continue serving as the assistant coach for boys' varsity soccer, which he did during the 2004-05 school year. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Georgia. He lives on campus.

Angela Flannigan will be an adjunct faculty member in the fine arts department. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Georgia.

Zaya Fusco will teach French and Spanish and coach junior varsity girls' volleyball and junior varsity girls' soccer. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French, with a minor in Spanish, from Illinois Wesleyan University. She also participated in several international education programs during college, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, served as the foreign language lab assistant for three years and was a member of the Illinois Wesleyan soccer team. She will live on campus.

Natalie Garrett has been named Alumni and Annual Fund assistant. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Kennesaw State University. Most recently, she interned as a campaign assistant at O’Neill and Associates fundraising consultant firm. She will live off campus.

Gwen Gibbes will teach Middle School Spanish, coach Middle School girls' soccer and serve as the assistant swimming coach. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Shorter College. She was a member of the Trinidad National Swim Team for four years and the Shorter College soccer team for four years. She will live on campus.

Mano Hernandez has been named IT assistant. He holds an Associate of Science in Business Management from Yuba Community College in Marysville, Calif. He has eight years of experience in the telecommunications field, and was involved in satellite communications for the U.S. Air Force from 1992 to 1996. He will live off campus.

Clara Hoellerbauer will teach Upper and Middle School Spanish and coach varsity boys tennis. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Modern Languages and Literatures (Spanish and French) from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Fluent in German, French and Spanish, she taught a four-hour per week language course in the Kenyon Intensive Language Model. She will live on campus.

Jamie Jackson will teach Computer Science/Introduction to Programming, and will coach Middle School swimming and golf. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Centenary College in Shreveport, La., and a Master of Education in Supervision and Administration from Clemson University. Most recently, she served as computer facilitator at T.L. Hannah High School in Anderson, S.C. She will live off campus.

Matthew Jones (’99) has been named director of student activities, and will coach varsity football and Middle School boys lacrosse. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia. He served as a member of the house duty staff, substitute teacher and football coach in 2004-05. He lives on campus.

Rebekah Kinney has been named assistant kindergarten and pre-first teacher at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a master’s in early childhood education from Berry College. She was a member of the house duty staff during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 school years, and has taught at Rome First School, South Jackson Elementary in Athens, Ga., and Berry College Elementary. She lives on campus.

Kay Lowe will teach Upper School Spanish, work with community service ASA and serve as the faculty adviser for the National Honors Society. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Spanish, from the University of Tennessee, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She also holds specialist degrees in English and Spanish from Jacksonville State University and the University of West Georgia, respectively. She has 30 years of teaching experience, has served as department chairperson, and has been named STAR Teacher and Teacher of the Year. She will live off campus.

Kila McCann has been named head of house. She holds a business degree in marketing and public relations from St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, and is currently working toward a four-year Professional Arts Degree at Athabasca University in Calgary, Alberta. McCann worked most recently as international student counselor at Fulford Academy in Brockville, Ontario, and as an admission officer at St. Lawrence College. She will live on campus.

Morgan McCrary (’01) will teach Upper School English and Drama, and direct the winter and spring plays. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts, with a minor in English, from Rhodes College. She will live on campus.

Debra Myrick will teach Upper School math, coach Middle School boys soccer and serve as the assistant girls softball coach. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The Johns Hopkins University and a master’s in speech and hearing from Washington University. Most recently, she taught at Central Institutes for the Deaf in St. Louis, Mo. She also taught science and math at Darlington from 1988 to 1991. She will live off campus.

Jamey Newsome has been named assistant director of Darlington School Soccer Academy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Mars Hill College (N.C.) and a United States Soccer Federation “B” License. During the past 11 years, he has been involved with numerous soccer camps and associations. He will live off campus.

Erin Nida has been named first-grade aide at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Shorter College and a Master of Education from the University of West Georgia. She has taught at Hamilton Crossing Elementary School in Cartersville, Ga., and Adairsville Elementary School. She will live off campus.

Alan Parish will teach Graphic Design and Photojournalism, and will serve as head swimming coach and assistant cross country coach. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design, with a minor in journalism and mass communication, from Samford University. He was a member of the First Team All Track Conference TAAC Track and Field in 2000, the Trans America Athletic Conference - All Academic from 1997 to 1999, and the U.S. Swimming League from 1986 to 1994. He will live on campus.

Lee Powers will teach Upper School history and serve as the assistant coach for lacrosse and middle school girls basketball. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Franklin and Marshall College (Penn.), and completed graduate studies at the University of Delaware. Most recently, he taught at Wilmington Friends School in Delaware. He will live on campus.

Nicole Shaub has been named assistant dean of college guidance and middle school counselor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication Studies from Vanderbilt University and has just completed two master’s degrees in education and counseling psychology from Columbia University. Shaub served as a member of the Vanderbilt University admission staff for two years. She will live on campus.

Cindy Stinson has been named second-grade aide at the Lower School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of Maryland, a teaching certificate from Berry College and a Master of Education from the University of West Georgia. She will live off campus.

Catherine Seigler will be an adjunct faculty member in the fine arts department. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Converse College.

Susan Tate has been named registrar. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems from the University of Georgia and a Master of Public Administration from the University of West Georgia. She served as director of financial aid at both Shorter and Floyd Colleges from 1996 to 2002, and began working at Darlington on a part-time basis in the winter of the 2004-05 school year. She lives off campus.

Kathy Ann Turner has been named postmistress. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and is currently working on her Master of Business Administration, both from Shorter College. She lives off campus.

Tom Whitworth has been named headmaster. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Education in Secondary Education and Supervision and English from The Citadel (Charleston, S.C.) With 25 years of administrative experience, he served as founding headmaster of Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va., assistant headmaster and academic dean at St. Stephen’s School in Alexandria, Va., headmaster at Frederica Academy on St. Simon’s Island, Ga., and assistant headmaster and upper school director at Sea Pines Academy on Hilton Head Island, S.C. In addition, Whitworth has taught journalism, American history and English and has served as college counselor and athletic director.

Anne Paige Wilson has been named director of marketing. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Berry College. Most recently, she served as event coordinator for Redmond Regional Medical Center. She has also been a community volunteer with numerous organizations for the past 15 years. She will live off campus.

Shelley Womack has been named second-grade aide at the Lower School. She attended Floyd College, and has most recently worked at Hunt & Associates Appraisal Firm and Ledbetter Appraisal Service. She will live off campus.

Libbie Zimmer has been named learning skills consultant. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Development from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., and a Master of Education in Early Childhood Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She has been on staff at Darlington for eight years, and has broad experience in working with the students in residence halls, on the Discipline Committee and in day-to-day student life. She lives on campus.
