Athletes earn recognition for efforts

Each season sports awards are given to those athletes who have made significant contributions to their sport. In the 2004-05 school year, the following athletes were recognized:



Fall 2003 Sports Awards

The Macon A. Brock Award: Donated by Brock Jewelry Company to those players on the varsity football team who have been the most valuable defensive and offensive linemen.

Offensive Lineman: Ben Bevill

The Roger Hackett Award: Given to the most valuable back on the varsity football team

Lawton Wilson



Newton Jewelers Award: Given by Mr. Jim Newton to the most outstanding blocker on the varsity football team.

Sam Wilson



The Ross Lynn Award: Established by Mr. J.C. Rhea for the football player who has meant most to the team in spirit and conduct even though he may not have won a letter.



The Alumni Football Award: Given by a Rome alumnus and presented each year to the member of the varsity football team who is chosen by his teammates as the most valuable member of the team.

Chantz McClinic



The Billy Atkins Award: Given by Billy Atkins ’50 and awarded to the senior football player who ha most exemplified the phrase “paying the price” for excellence in football at Darlington.

The Charlie Davidson Award: Given to the most outstanding defensive back on the varsity football team.

The Golden Helmut Award: Selected by the area football officials for sportsmanship and cooperation on the field.

The Darlington Boosters Club Scholastic Award: Sponsored by the Darlington Boosters Club and presented to the varsity football player with the highest academic average.

Head Hunter Award: Donated by Greg Hopkins ’69 and Keith Hopkins ’95 and given to the leading tackler on the varsity football team.

The Berry Cheerleading MVP Award: Established by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Berry and their daughters Lowry and Natalie and given to that cheerleader from the varsity football, basketball, or competition squad who has exhibited the overall highest qualities of spirit, leadership, and athletic ability.

The Lauren Muller Senior Cheerleading Award: Established in 2002 by D. and Mrs. Richard Muller Jr. in recognition of the football, basketball, or competition cheerleader who exemplifies outstanding school spirit, sportsmanship, and leadership.

Presented to that boy and girl who have shown “outstanding spirit and performance in track and field.

Team Spirit Award in Girls Track: Presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty.

James Jeffrey Gaither Award: Given by the 1997 boys and girls track team in honor of Coach Gaither. It is an award which is voted on by the track team and given to the boy or girl track runner who best exemplifies the teachings of Coach Gaither; i.e., persistence and dedication.

The Jack Barkell Award: Given to that golfer who has the lowest average score for the season and has shown outstanding ability.

The Lanny Pinkard Memorial Trophy: Presented in memory of Larry Pinkard, a member of the 1987-89 Golf Team and Class of 1989, to the Most Improved Golfer.

The Hustler Award for Baseball: Presented to the player who gives 100 percent effort both in practice and contests.

The Batting Championship Trophy: Awarded by the coaches to the player with the highest batting average for the season.

The Harry L. Boss Sr. Memorial Award: Given by Harry Boss ’34 in memory of his father and presented to the best baseball player on the varsity squad.

The James Carraway Soccer Award: Given for outstanding sportsmanship on the soccer field by Dr. and Mrs. A. Carraway in memory of their son, James ’53.

The Doug Brown Award for Soccer: Established by the late Mr. John R. Cunningham Jr. in memory of Douglas Brown Jr. ’65, and awarded to the member of the varsity soccer team voted most valuable by his teammates.

The John R. Cunningham Jr. Soccer Coaches Award: Presented to the member of the soccer squad who has been of the greatest value to the coaches and the team. The award is made possible by members of the soccer squads who played under the guidance of John R. Cunningham Jr. in his 20 years of coaching.

The Philip M. Ham Spirit Award for Soccer: Presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty. Former students and players of Mr. Ham in his honor and memory make the award possible.

The Alice Allgood Cooper Award for Tennis: Awarded to the most valuable player in boys tennis.

The Marion and Nelson Dobbs Award for Tennis: Awarded to the player who displays the best effort throughout the tennis season.

Most Improved Player Girls Soccer Award: Presented each year to the player who, from the first day of practice to the season’s terminus has shown the most improvement in her performance on the soccer field.

Most Valuable Player Defense: Presented to the player who has been the most critical “cog” in preventing the other team from scoring.

Most Improved Lacrosse Player: Endowed by Mr. and Mrs. William Lee Thuston ’67 and given to that player who has shown the greatest improvement of his skills, leadership, and role in the team’s success over the course of the season. It recognizes the individual who through personal initiative, determination to better one’s self, and desire to better the team, has made himself an example to be emulated for all who are part of the Darlington Lacrosse Program.

Barton Lowrey



Varsity Lacrosse Founders Award: Endowed by John S. Husser and given in recognition of Coach Hyuk Kim, Norwood Teague, and the members of the first Darlington lacrosse team who contributed to founding the sport at Darlington in 1991. Given to remember the tradition and honor of the game of lacrosse and that of the Darlington lacrosse program, this award is given to that player who best exemplifies the ideals of a sportsman: unselfish dedication, team before self, and unyielding effort, setting the standards for all Darlington lacrosse players.

Hunter Edwards



Most Valuable Lacrosse Player: Endowed by Gordon Lee Hight III ’94 in recognition of that player, who through personal accomplishments, team leadership, and athletic excellence has made the greatest contribution to the team’s pursuit of victory. It is that player whose achievements and success are most clearly and indelibly linked with those of the team who stands out as the most valuable player.
