The Middle School girls soccer team began the season in a triumphant mode, winning its first two games. Rachel Wiggins, scored all four goals during their 4-0 conquest of Marietta. The girls then beat Mt. Paran 3-1, with Elizabeth Connelly scoring two goals and Wiggins scoring one.
The girls lost hard-fought games to Walker, Etowah, and Inman. In those games, Wiggins scored four goals, Mimi Sumner two, and Kirby Cross one. The girls bounced back with a 9-0 win against Fellowship Christian. Laura McCord finished that game with three goals while Wiggins added two. Erin Euler, Emily Brock, Sumner and Connelly each added one goal apiece.
“Rachel Wiggins is without question the best girl soccer player ever to come through the Middle School,” coach Kevin Ivester said. “She really carried us, but we also had a very solid overall team.”
Team members included Brittany Baxter, Emily Brock, Kathryn Byars, Ellen Collier, Elizabeth Connelly, Kirby Cross, Virginia Davidson, Meggie Erwin, Erin Euler, Baldwin Harris, Janie Hortman, Laura McCord, Esther Meadows, Jacqueline Molina, Mimi Sumner, Rachel Wiggins, and Anna Lee Williams.
The boys soccer team’s 1-5 record this season reflected the age of the team — four eighth-graders, five seventh-graders, and eight sixth-graders.
“The team will be strong the next couple of years with the experience the young ones are getting,” said Ivester.
The boys were triumphant over Woodward, with Garrett Manis scoring all three goals in a 3-2 victory. The team was led by captains Jeffrey Connelly, Spencer Duffey, and Manis.
Team members included Brian Eberhard, Alex Gonzalez, Davis Grizzard, Bucky Harris, Paul Kountz, Barton Lowrey, Grant Muller, William Richardson, Frank Stuckey, Matthew Stuenkel, Nathan Sumner, Brightman Thomas, Will Watters, and Michael Webster.
