Pre-K to 8 Curriculum Guide 2023-2024

Physical Education

In physical education, pre-K to 5 students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and appreciation for lifetime fitness. Pre-K to 5 students learn fundamental movement skills and develop gross and fine motor skills. Students learn rules and procedures for simple games and apply safety practices associated with physical activities.

In each activity, pre-K to second-grade students engage in developing basic levels of strength, endurance, and flexibility. In addition, they learn space awareness and to accept and appreciate personal differences. Students in grades 3-5 work on combining the manipulative skills and basic concepts taught into more advanced and dynamic activities. These activities and games focus on success and learning for all students, rather than just winning. Students continue to learn etiquette of participation and skills to resolve conflicts during games and sports in acceptable ways.

The philosophy behind a strong elementary physical education program is to teach students lifelong fitness skills that they can apply to their daily lives. The pre-K to 5 physical education programs will also develop self-confidence and positive self-esteem through successful physical activity. Students are taught through competitive team activities to demonstrate cooperation, good sportsmanship, and safety.
