Penalties

Work Detail/Detention
Work detail, which involves service to the school, and detention takes priority over all other requirements and activities. If a student misses the assigned work detail/detention, he/she will be assigned a second work detail/detention or Saturday School. A student will serve work detail/detention upon the accumulation of the 3rd and 6th demerits or upon committing one of the offenses that result in an automatic work detail. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule a work detail with the Student Life Office within two school days of receiving a work detail.  Failure to schedule within that time period or missing an assigned work detail will result in a 2nd work detail or Saturday school.

Saturday School
Saturday School occurs each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and involves isolated academic time and service to the school. Saturday School must be served on the date it is assigned and takes precedence over any other activity. Missing an assigned Saturday School will result in the assignment of two Saturday Schools.

Suspension
For serious disciplinary and Honor Code violations or a pattern of minor violations, a student may be placed on in-school or out-of-school suspension.

  • In-school Suspension: Each day while under in-school suspension, the student will be separated from the student body during the school day. The suspension may include isolation time and/or service to the school. Students will not be allowed to represent the school in any extracurricular activity or function on the days of suspension. In-school suspension lasts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. After serving in-school suspension for the day, day students must leave campus and return home immediately for the remainder of the day; resident students must return immediately to their residential house, check in promptly with the duty teacher or Head of House, and remain on campus for the rest of the night.

  • Out-of-School Suspension: For extremely serious disciplinary and honor violations, a penalty may include out-of-school suspension. In such cases, the student must depart campus and be under his or her parents' supervision for the required period of time. During this time, the student will be expected to keep up with all academic work and will be required to return to school with all assignments completed and ready to turn in. It is the responsibility of the parents and the student to see that all academic obligations are fulfilled promptly. Any travel expenses incurred due to the out-of-school suspension will be borne by the parents. Day students under out-of-school suspension will not be allowed on campus for any reason, nor may they attend any school function whether on or off campus.

The student (and, if necessary, the parents) will then return to school and meet with school officials to discuss the conditions under which the student will be allowed to remain at Darlington. All quizzes, tests, and other assignments missed while the student was absent from school must be made up within a period of time equal to the number of suspension days.
