Darlington partners with Atrium Health for its Student Health Center, located in Wilcox Hall.
Hours of Operation
The Health Center keeps extended hours for boarding students to accommodate all of their medical needs. Should they feel ill during the night, it is advised they call the dorm parent on duty who will have a supply of over-the-counter medications.
Mandatory Annual Physical
Darlington School requires an annual physical exam be completed and returned prior to student arrival on campus for the upcoming school year. The physical should be submitted electronically through the Darlington registration page.
Prescription Medications
Boarding students are required to register all prescription medication, over the counter medications, and supplements with the Health Center. Please note: day students who are prescribed medication to take during school hours (such as Adderall, Concerta, Ritalin, etc.) also must report this to the Health Center and a plan will be made on an individual basis for administration. A Medication Authorization Form must be completed prior to the beginning of the school year.
Note: Newly prescribed medication during the school year must be brought to the Health Center, along with the Medication Authorization Form.
The Health Center works with Winslette Pharmacy for prescriptions and refills. Discuss a plan for your student to obtain prescription refills with their physician so that there is no interruption of their medication. Notify the Health Center on orientation day of this plan.

Prescription Medication Protocol
Students are required to comply with the Health Center protocol and arrive promptly at the appointed time to take medication. It is Darlington School’s policy to notify the parent/guardian if the student is not taking medication as prescribed.
All morning medications are required to be taken between 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM on weekdays, and 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM on weekends. Failure to do so, regardless of first period class (free period) will result in a demerit every day medication is missed.
All evening medications are required to be taken by 9:45 PM Sunday - Thursday. Friday and Saturday, evening medications must be taken by 10:45 PM. Failure to do so will result in a demerit every day medication is missed.
Over The Counter Medications And Supplements
Darlington prohibits boarding students from keeping over the counter medications and supplements in their dorm rooms. Medications such as cold and flu, ibuprofen, tylenol, and other wellness medications must be stored and distributed by the Health Center. The Health Center will determine on a case by case basis whether a student will be permitted to keep medications such as birth control and inhalers in their dorm room.
The Health Center regards and respects the policy statement from the AAP which emphasizes “the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly condemns the use of performance enhancing substances and vigorously endorses efforts to eliminate their use among children and adolescents.” Therefore, students are discouraged from using nutritional supplements or performance enhancing products unless there is an explicit medical order from their physician.
Students are not permitted to make online purchases and/or accept mail delivery of:
Absence(s) Due To Illness
If a day student becomes ill on campus, they must be excused by the Health Center (and check out through the Health Center) before departing campus to go home.
During school hours, boarding students are permitted to rest for part of the day in the Health Center should they feel ill. We do not notify parents if one or two classes are missed, but an update will be sent through our student treatment records. Parents should request daily emails from the school. We encourage students to communicate with their parents regarding minor visits to the Health Center.
Should parents have any questions or concerns, we encourage them to phone the nurse directly at 706-236-0428 or email the Health Center at healthcenter@darlingtonschool.org
Medical Appointments
To help avoid scheduling conflicts, please let the Health Center nurses schedule your student's appointments. This will ensure your child arrives at their appointment on time and returns to campus as quickly as possible. Please contact us at healthcenter@darlingtonschool.org or call 706-236-0428 for appointment scheduling, questions or concerns.
The Health Center will list the student as excused, and it is the student’s responsibility to communicate with teachers regarding any missed or work due for that day. All students, day and boarding, who leave campus for a medical appointment, must check out and back in through the Health Center. Parents and students should strive to schedule appointments when they will not interfere with the student’s academic, co-curricular, or other campus obligations.
If a boarding student has an appointment off campus a Darlington School representative will accompany and transport the student. Students who are 18 and over may transport themselves to and from appointments.
Appointments will be put into google calendar and notifications sent via email to parent, student, and head of house.
Students who are having wisdom teeth extracted or other minor surgery should schedule it while they are at home under parental care during vacations, except in emergencies.

In the case of emergency sickness or injury, students should report to the teacher most immediately accessible and/or to the Health Center. Students admitted to the Health Center will remain until officially dismissed by the nurse.
Sports Medicine
Darlington School has certified athletic trainers to work with the School’s sports programs, providing immediate evaluation, first aid, and rehabilitation modalities to injured athletes. The athletic trainers will refer more complicated or serious injuries for evaluation to a specialist (e.g., orthopedist, cardiologist, or neurologist). Injuries or illness may cause athletes to be held out of athletics until it is safe for them to return. Athletes who are not at risk of extending an injury or compromising their health and well-being will likely be able to participate in athletics with little or no restriction.
Dental & Orthodontics
For boarding students with ongoing medical specialty needs, such as orthodontic/dental, parents may wish to establish a relationship with the specialty practice near Darlington School. We recommend that you forward records and communicate directly with the office prior to your child arriving on campus in the fall.
