Class Registration Policies

The registration team includes Admission Office personnel, the Registrar, the Master Scheduler, and the Upper School Director. In some cases, department heads are consulted to determine eligibility. The names of each are listed below.

Registration During the Admission Process:

  • Matthew Peer, Assistant Head of School for Enrollment Management

Registration For New and Returning Students:

The Suggested Course of Study, located on the student's web page, is a list of available courses.  Parents must choose the student’s courses from the Suggested Course of Study page, at which time the students place in the available classes will be confirmed.

Students who enroll at a late date may receive notification that the course is full and that the student has been placed on a wait list. At that time, the student and parent should choose a second option from the Suggested Course of Study page and wait to receive word regarding the wait-listed class. The absence of communication indicates that no change in the wait-list status has occurred. Please note that families may not hear about enrollment in wait-listed classes until late summer.

Whenever possible, additional course sections will be created if and when enrollment numbers warrant the creation of a new section.

Note that all course selections are finalized once the master schedule has been set. Your student’s final schedule (with teacher assignments) will be available online one week before the start of school. Darlington School reserves the right to add and drop classes according to availability and qualification status.

Minimum Class-Admission Criteria
Teachers select the Suggested Course of Study based on minimum course prerequisites which are detailed in the Curriculum Guide. Please review the Curriculum Guide for further details. Students must meet the minimum qualifications to enroll in a class.

Class Size Limits
Class sizes are limited to ensure the quality of the learning experience. Classroom size is the greatest restricting factor. Also considered are other “soft” factors, including teacher methodologies (i.e. labs, collaborative group work, lecture, etc.) Therefore, some classes will have maximum sizes as low as 17, while others will be capped at 25. Requests to exceed a maximum class size are not allowed.

General Recommendations
When registering for classes, it is important to consider several key decisions and timelines. Problems arise when parents and students do not consult the Curriculum Guide and accurately plan the coming year’s courses. Currently enrolled students are encouraged to discuss future courses with department heads, advisors, and the Master Scheduler.

The courses offered on the Suggested Course of Study web page have been screened by the teacher and department head to ensure appropriate course of study and adherence to Darlington’s Curriculum Guide. Parents are encouraged to collaborate with their child and relevant teachers/department heads when considering and selecting from suggested courses for the next year.
