Pre-Kindergarten Teacher


Darlington School seeks a Pre-Kindergarten Teacher to join its Primary Grades teaching team. A Darlington teacher fully supports the mission and values of the school and has the primary responsibility for creating the best student experience possible in support of the school’s learning framework, The Cycle of Learning. The candidate should value the craft of teaching as much as the skills and content being learned, and would join a dynamic environment of teaching professionals who are continuously growing and collaborating. Teachers work with grade-level and enrichment teachers along with the administrative team to support the mission of Darlington School and provide a program that nurtures every child’s success.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in an area relevant to early childhood education, preferably with a master's degree and relevant classroom teaching experience. The Pre-Kindergarten teacher is responsible for cultivating a superior student experience and must have a genuine appreciation and passion for teaching children and working with all types of learners. Darlington seeks candidates who can contribute to and will support the academic and extracurricular life of the entire school.

  • Training using the Orton-Gillingham or comparable multisensory method of reading instruction (Preferred or able to receive training)
  • Course Design 
    • Designs a course backwards from a given skills-based curriculum map and uses a wide range of assessment tools to measure progress against learning goals.
    • Designs lessons for students to actively learn skills using the Darlington model of Discovery, Application, and Reflection.
  • Course Build
    • Course is built on consistent structure, layout, and communication using developmentally appropriate routines and practices which foster independence, confidence, and flexible pacing as well as promotes physical, social, and emotional safety and wellness.
  • Teaching
    • Builds an authentic relationship with each student as the cornerstone of learning experience.
    • Approaches the practice of teaching and learning with a growth mindset and always acts professionally and holds high expectations for him/herself. 
    • Facilitates the needs of individual learners in a safe and active learning environment.
    • Communicates effectively and uses technology proficiently.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepares age-appropriate lessons and activities in all content areas
  • Demonstrates mastery of related subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials
  • Establishes a strong and collaborative working relationship with Pre-Kindergarten Teaching Assistant
  • Engages parents in the education of their children
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members
  • Implements the Orton-Gillingham Model of instruction in reading (multisensory method)
  • Creates and directs grade level play
  • Creates an organized and inviting classroom; understands the importance of flexible seating
  • Maintains a safe, organized classroom that supports students’ independent learning, collaboration, and choice
  • Embraces STEM education and learning through exploration
  • Uses different teaching strategies and creates learning opportunities that address different learning styles
  • Implements differentiated instruction and lesson development
  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports
  • Demonstrates the skill of using the SmartBoard and implementing technology into the curriculum with a 1:1 iPad program
  • Develops cross-curricular units with team members; collaborates to integrate curriculum with enrichment teachers
  • Covers content and aligns scope and sequence with vertical teams
  • Attends faculty meetings, planning meetings, parent conferences, etc.
  • Supports the events of Tiger Pride and One School
  • Takes initiative for personal and professional staff development
  • Supervises students in and out of the classroom
  • Assists with special events as they relate to the grade level, Pre-K-2 Team, division, and One School
  • Assists with the morning and afternoon carline duty
