In this #SeniorSpotlight let’s get to know Steven Yan, a four-year boarding student from Shanghai, China, and one of Darlington’s National Merit Scholarship Commended Students.
What house are you a member of?
Moser House
What are you involved in at Darlington?
Wind Ensemble, winter musical, Physics Club, cross country (previous year only due to COVID)
If you are involved in fine arts, what is your favorite activity and why?
Winter musical because I enjoy the opportunity of playing more challenging pieces in a small music group and experiencing what it is like to play in a theatrical setting.
What's your favorite place on campus and why?
Morris Chapel. I love playing on the Steinway piano and pipe organ in the chapel.
Who's your favorite teacher and why?
Mr. Shorey because he teaches clearly, is helpful outside of the classroom, and is an interesting person to talk to.
What's your favorite thing about Darlington?
The people. I have made some of my best friends at Darlington.
Describe an experience that you've had at Darlington that you couldn't have had anywhere else.
RUMPUS (our annual, weekend-long dorm competition) and being so genuinely supportive of my house is a unique experience.
What are some of the ways you've grown since you first came to Darlington?
I became more outgoing. I used to not like speaking to other people. Also a big achievement at Darlington for me is learning to play the piano.
Where do you want to go to college and what is your dream job?
I want to go to Cornell. My dream job is being an aerospace engineer or a physicist.
