My Senior Ventures project involves organizing monthly social groups for teens with Down syndrome to help them with important communication and social skills. Meetings are virtual for now and include 5 to 10 teenagers. I focus the social groups on specific topics and create and share videos to assist the teenagers with their communication needs. My next meeting will be focused on Valentine's Day. My classmates in the Senior Ventures class made cards for the teens in my social group. I am mailing each of the group members a packet that includes Valentine's stickers, Bingo boards, paper, and the cards created by the class. At our next virtual meeting, the group members will use the supplies to make cards for others, and we will play Valentine's Day bingo together. They will learn important social skills while participating in these activities. I am thankful for the members of the Senior Ventures class for assisting me with this part of my project.
The Senior Ventures leadership program is a year-long senior project built on a framework of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The topic and the project design are chosen by an individual student or a pair of students, and the journey is guided by Darlington faculty as well as mentors in the community. Most projects fall into one of the following categories: Investigation, Performance, Entrepreneurship, and Outreach. Candidates are selected according to proposal quality, feasibility, and commitment.
