Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni.
There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.
We hope you will enjoy getting to know these seniors better and will make a gift to honor the Class of 2020, who need our support now more than ever. To make a gift to the 2019-2020 Darlington Fund please click here.
How have you met the challenge of distance learning?
I have set up a daily schedule for myself that includes daily office hours, walks, time for homework, and time to spend with my family. I am appreciative of distance learning because I have the ability to connect with my teachers and classmates who I would not be able to see otherwise.
What’s your favorite song?
My favorite song is "Take It Easy” by the Eagles. It’s a classic that has a warm and inviting vibe that everyone of all ages can enjoy.
What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?
My favorite thing served in the dining hall are the rice krispy treats. They are so good, but you have to get them while they last!
What house are you in?
Although I don’t hold any leadership positions, I am a part of Register and love the supportive community that it is.
What are you involved in at Darlington (clubs, etc.)?
During my first two years of high school I was on the rowing team, cheered the past three years, and have been on the golf team all four years. I have enjoyed becoming close to the people and coaches of all my sports, and I can easily say that I have learned a lot about leadership from all three sports I have participated in. Additionally, I am part of Concert Choir, which is led by Mr. McVety. I enjoy this because all of my close friends are in it and it has become a tight-knit community for all who are in it. I am also in Y-Cabinet and am secretary for the National Honors Society. Lastly, I had the great opportunity to be a part of High School Leadership Rome, where I learned about the Rome/Floyd community and how I am able to help it grow and strengthen.
If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?
I find it difficult to narrow down a favorite coach, as they all have had a great influence on me in their own ways. However, Ms. Wendy Payne became a constant in my life during our time in cheerleading. She showed me that patience and kindness towards others is able to have a strong impact on others, even if it is not seen. Although she scared me at first, I quickly realized that my view was skewed and she became my greatest supporter. She always fights for the underdog, stays true to herself, and gives selflessly to others- this is why she has had the greatest impact not only on me or my entire cheer team, but to all students she comes in contact with at Darlington.
What is your favorite place on campus and why?
My favorite place on campus are the lacrosse fields. Although I don’t play lacrosse, I love walking there with others and seeing my friends play. There is something about the light that hits near the trees that is so special. I have made only good memories there and it’s so peaceful.
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
I find this question most challenging for many reasons, but mainly because it is hard for me to put someone ahead of others when so many teachers have stuck by my side throughout my four-year journey at Darlington. Mr. McDurmon, Ms. Lowe, and Mr. and Mrs. Inman, in particular, have championed me to beyond exemption and I find myself always grateful for their endless support.
Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?
I plan on attending the University of Georgia this upcoming fall and studying International Affairs. Go Dawgs!
If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?
Brant, after Mr. Evans, and Dana, after the legend: Ms. Peek.
If you were given $10,000 to donate where would you donate to and why?
I would use the money to fund a rowing program. I am fortunate enough to have participated my freshman and sophomore year and I believe that with the right coaches and equipment, Darlington could easily have an excellent rising program. My father started the program at Darlington when I was very young and growing up I made memories that revolved around his rowers and practices. Although he has a lot on his plate now and is extremely busy, I still believe that finding a coach who wants a rowing program to excel is possible and could make Darlington well-known in the rowing world. Needless to say, rowing is a sport that, once you learn it, you’ll be able to do until you’re 90 years old. Additionally, it’s a great outlet for anything that you may be going through and exercises your entire body, which not many sports do.
We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year sure you have a great experience - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?
Thank you for giving me a place to call home.
What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?
The people. Everyone at Darlington brings something different to the table and the community is built because of the people and what they do. I have met friends that I know will be with me for years to come. I will miss everyone next year as we part ways, but I know that when we do see each other, it’ll be like we never were away from one another.
